water pollution

Today in class we learned about different types of pollution. Four major types are toxic, sediment, nutrient, and bacteria pollutants. We did a 12 question gizmo in class and took a 5 question quiz too. We talked about each one: nutrient- farm and golf courses for example, sediment- construction zone cut down trees and that access soil runs off into rivers, Bacteria- germs can spread to our water supply and get a whole town sick and toxic- waste, and paint that are improperly disposed and they can get into our water supply.

Today in class, we all read a few pages in the textbook, and answered questions over what we read.

If you were absent, or if you are unsure what we were supposed to read and which questions we were supposed to answer; this is what we must complete:

Read Pages 48-53

Section Assessment #1-3 (On Page 53)

Read Pages 132-137

Section Assessment #1-3 (On Page 137)

This entire assignment is due tomorrow at the BEGINNING of class, so make sure that you have it done!

10/12/11

Today in class, we took the test over the water cycle, and turned in the study guide. If you haven't taken the test, you should study; the water cycle, phase changes, converting measurement, vocab from the beginning of the year, density, and the pH scale. Be sure to look at your study guide. Homework was not assigned today.

October 11th Science

Today we had Mrs. Lester (Mama Lester!) as our substitute teacher. All we did basically was went over a review packet for our big test the next day! We did not totally complete it, so the rest was homework for the next day. Although it was a review, it was good brush up on what we've already learned.

pre-test quiz

Today in science we took out our phones, laptops, or ipods to use the "Science 9 Water cycle" session. The phone number we texted was 37607 and the first message you sent to them was the number 456940 and the rest of the of the texts were numbers or letters from the quiz. The laptop website was PollEv.com, and it was the same thing for the ipods/ipads. We took a pre-test quiz online in class with the whole class. Two key vocabulary words you will need to know is permeable-lets a substance pass through and porosity-holds/absorb the substance. We also experimented with phenathaline on flowers and indicator paper.

*Bergndi's Classroom Blog!!* :)

*Today is Friday October 7th! We had a very exciting class today..! First, we walked over to the Middle School to take water samples from the pond. We had to take the temperature of the water. Then we took a small water sample from a side of the pond. Once we were back in the classroom, we all compared the temperature of turbity of our water samples!*

Classroom Blog October 4, 2011

Today in class we finished finding the pH of different substances. We needed to have a total of 15. After we finished that we got into 4 groups of 6 or so and found the probes of the substances we tested. The machine that I was at wasn't working like it was supposed to so Mrs. Sorensen had to help us. She had to clean the pH sensor because there was another older substance on it. After it was clean it started to work correctly. In my group we only had time to test the Gatorade and Juicy Juice. For the Gatorade the pH paper said 3 and the prob said 3.02. For the Juicy Juice I got 2 on the pH and 3.88 for the prob.

Megs Classroom Blog--October 3, 2011

Today in our class we first talked about pH. We learned that it is a measure of how basic or acidic water is. On a scale from 0 to 14, zero would be extremely acidic, 7 would be neutral (pure water) and 14 is a base. We were taught that if there is a OH- hydroxide ion before, or in the formula, it means it is a base. Or, if there is an H+ ion in it, it means that it is an acid. Next in our class we got out all of the different liquids that people brought and we got out the pH papers. We then told what pH balance what liquid was. So, here are my results...

  1. Cucumber melon perfume- pH of 6

  2. Carried Away Perfume- pH of 6

  3. Tea- pH of 7

  4. Water- pH of 7

  5. Gatorade- pH of 5

  6. Pickle Juice- pH of 4

  7. Vitamin water- pH of 5

  8. Mountain Dew- pH of 5

  9. Tonic water- pH of 1

  10. Sodium hydroxide- pH of 13 or maybe even 14

September 28th

Today in class half of us work on the ipads and the other half work on the computers. The people that were on the I-pads had to do a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt was about water and rivers, and what happens to them and stuff that is in them. We went around the room and scaned papers that led us to a website, and from there we answered questions.
The people that were on the computers did two gizmos about density. When they played with it long enough and felt confident they then took a 5 question quiz over what they learned, and were graded over it.
